Happy Holidays!

Dear ASFL Parents,

As we bring closure to the first semester, I’d like to start by mentioning the word ‘Thanks” which is something we normally do more in November, around the Thanksgiving holiday. However, I would be remiss if I did not once again thank you for your support of ASFL. I am certainly thankful to you for entrusting your children to us.  The staff and I will continue to work diligently to make ASFL a school that improves each day.

December certainly brings much excitement. The obvious holiday cheer is in the air, and the mood of most schools is usually very good in December. ASFL is no exception. Our students and staff have had an extraordinary month as well as an awesome first semester!

During this holiday break, please help your child remain academically focused. With all the excitement of the season, academic focus can wane somewhat. Take thirty minutes each day and read to or with your child. Let’s work together to keep the students focused! Of course, I want you to take time to relax! The students deserve it!

As you plan your second semester calendar, please consider giving our school a little of your time by volunteering and being visible at school. You would be amazed how powerful your presence in the school affects your child’s academic performance. Parental involvement is crucial!

Now we get time to take a break!  Enjoy your holiday, rest, relax, eat until you are merry, spend precious time with loved ones, laugh, chat about positive things, and count your blessings.  Time is a precious commodity and once it is gone, we can’t get it back – so spend time doing what you love to do and inspire those around you to do likewise!

I wish you the very happiest of holidays and look forward to another New Year with you, my
awesome parents!

Thanks for being a part of Team ASFL!

Sincerely yours,

Tammy Summerville, Ed.D.

News for November!

Dear Parents,

I would like to give a big thank you to everyone who sent it prizes and treats for the Positive Behavior Celebration. We had so much fun recognizing students for their wonderful behavior this past nine week grading period. Please encourage your child to continue to strive to receive STARerfic BUCKS! Congratulations to Ms. Weaver and Mr. Clark's homeroom/advisory classes for earning the most STARerfic BUCKS. These students received a coupon for a free Juice Alive drink as well as a pizza party. There were also individual students who were recognized for earning the most BUCKS: Shana Hines, Miya Richardson, Emily Perry, Chase Guida, and Antonio Raymundo.

Special thanks to Lisa Berry, Rod Harris, and Columbia High School's IB students for coordinating our annual Fall Festival. This festival had the most attendees since I've been at ASFL. Of course, this event couldn't have been a success without your support. Thanks for sending in drinks, candy, prizes, and other items to make this event a success!

The Outdoor Classroom Project is making progress. Thanks to Jame Bailey, our appointed Public Relations Coordinator, for inviting some very special dignitaries to our Groundbreaking Ceremony on October 29. The following dignitaries attended: Ms. Laurie McCaulley, HCS School Board Member; Mr. Vallely, Representative from Mayor Battle's Office; and Mr. Will Culver, City Councilman. A special appreciation is also extended to Mr. George Kost, a landscape architect. We had lots of food sent in from parents for our reception. Wow! I thought we were having just punch and cookies; however, the SGA students and parents really stepped up to the plate! Thank you!

I will send you an update this week on the total amount of funds raised for the Outdoor Classroom Project as a result of the above activities. If you have any contacts that may be willing to provide financial resources for this project, please let us know. Mr. Blalock, Mrs. Traylor, Mr. Kost, and parents have drafted an extensive proposal and outline about the project that may be shared with individuals who may be willing to assist us with this project.

Please remember to sign up to follow our Parent Blog at www.asflparent.blogspot.com, or on Twitter @asflk8. Also ASFL has a Facebook page @ASFLPTA. We also have a school calendar on our school website as well as at the bottom of the parent blog.  I use these resources to communicate to you the happenings at our school. I love technology!

What a Great Beginning!

We have had a great beginning to this school year! The students returned energized and ready to learn! It has probably been the best opening since I've been at ASFL. I would like to thank you for encouraging your children to be respectful, be responsible, and to be safe every day. These words are a part of our daily message to the students. The students at ASFL are truly a cut above the rest! I am so blessed to have an opportunity to lead such a dynamic school community.

Updating our STI computer database with current student information is one of our first tasks that we work on upon returning in August. If you have not returned your child's registration packet, please do so by Monday, August 23rd. It is critical that we have the most recent contact information.

I am settling in to both office spaces; one in the main office and the other one in middle school. With the budget cuts, ASFL was reduced to a .5 Assistant Principal and a .5 Guidance Counselor. In order to be readily accessible to both elementary and middle school faculty and students, I decided to create a second space. So far- it seems to be working!

The students look great in their school uniforms! As a matter of fact, I am serving on a district-wide committee that is discussing the possibility of school uniforms for the district. A parent survey via Parentlink will be conducted in a few weeks. It really amazes me how the school uniform creates a calmness and focus within the students. Also, I have some kindergartener-first grade size new shirts with the ASFL logo that were donated. Please let me know if you need any of these items.

Some dates to remember:

August

23 - September 3: DIBELS Assessment for K-3 students; administered 3 times per year to determine students' oral reading fluency

September
6: Labor Day (No School)

13 - 15: 5th Grade Field Trip to Camp McDowell

17: Casual for a Cause Day - The students may pay $1.00 to wear their casual clothes. All of the proceeds will benefit our school, i.e. technology, classroom needs, outdoor classroom project; I am thinking that we will have at least one day a month designated as Casual for a Cause.

20-21: IB PYP Authorization Team Visit - The team will probably want to interview some parents, so I may be requesting some of you to participate.

21: PTA/Open House @ 6:00 p.m. (Tentative Date)

24: Fall School Pictures; Students may wear casual attire for fall pictures. These pictures will be in the yearbook. There is no charge to wear casual attire.

Please feel free to contact me at tsummerville@asflk8.com or 256-428-7000, if you have any questions or concerns. E-mail is probably the best means to reach me.

Thanks again for a great start! May your week be filled with breezes of excitement for the 2010-2011 school year.

School Uniforms

I wanted to pass some information along to all the parents about various local vendors who are selling school uniforms.

Wal-mart - Drake Avenue; Sizes 4-16; Price Ranges from $7.00 - $10.00

Target - Jones Valley Store; Price Ranges from $7.00 - $10.00

If you are planning to travel to Birmingham or Nashville and are a member of Costco, they have school uniforms by Nautica. Price Ranges $7.79 - $9.97. I have requested that our local store also ask this vendor to come to Huntsville. I'll keep you updated.

Thanks to all the Operation Facelift Volunteers!

Many thanks to all the volunteers who came out this morning to give our campus a facelift! It was a huge success! The campus looks awesome! It was so nice to see everyone working together to make our entire campus absolutely beautiful. I especially enjoyed seeing the students who came out to show their school pride. I've posted some pictures!

I hope to see everyone on August 5th at 6:00 p.m.

2010-2011 Class Assignments and Other Updates

K-5 classroom assignments will be posted in the front entrance window on July 30 after 12:00 p.m. Middle school students will be listed by the homeroom/advisory teacher.

Middle school schedules will be ready for pick-up on July 30 and August 2 from 2:00 p.m. -6:00 p.m. Students in grades 3-8 may also purchase their planner ($5.00); 6-8 students will need to pay for a hall/PE locker ($10.00) at this time. The locker rental fee covers the cost of the annual maintenance, i.e. reprogramming combinations.

Please remember to mark your calendar for our Back-to-School Orientation on August 5, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. You will have an opportunity to meet your child's teacher(s) and receive a brief overview of grade level procedures and expectations. I will also send an electronic "evite" invitation to get an estimate of how many families plan on attending.

I have asked that a representative from the Extended Day Program attend the Orientation to enroll any families who may be interested in their services.

Bus routes should be available at the Orientation. I requested these last week from Durham Bus Services and I was informed that the routes should be ready this week. Hopefully, I will definitely have these before August 5th.

Our school is participating in the "Tools for Schools" program sponsored by Channel 19 and Jerry Damson Honda/Acura. I'm not sure what supplies our school will receive, but please let me know if you need any of the basic school supplies. I also have some "Tools for Schools" backpacks from last year's distribution. I anticipate that we will receive some additional ones this year.

If you have any specific questions that I haven't answered, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail. I think all the essential information has been addressed to ensure a smooth opening of school! I am so EXCITED!

Thanks,

Tammy Summerville

Thank You for a Great Year!

Wow! We made it! Another exciting and fun-filled year at ASFL! It has truly been a joy having your children as a part of our ASFL family. They are a great group of students. I am very thankful and appreciative of all the support you have given our school. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to lead ASFL.

As we move into our summer vacation, please continue to have your children read each day for at least 30 minutes. They have worked so hard this past year and I want them to continue with their good habits. We will be sending a summer reading list home with the final report cards on May 28, 2010. I also encourage you to take your child to the public library or book store to select additional books to read over the summer. Some students will be required to take an Accelerated Reader test on the selected books during the first ten days of school upon their return.

In spite of the budget cuts and financial challenges, our students still received a first-class education. Because of your support and teachers using their personal funds, we were able to provide many of the same classroom experiences as in previous years. After this last legislative session, it was decided that for the second year, schools would not receive any monies for instructional classroom supplies, library enhancement, professional development, or technology. Without these funds from the state, it makes it quite difficult to continue some services. There may be times in the upcoming year when you may be asked to provide financial assistance to the school. I would like to thank you in advance for your support.

To prepare for the upcoming year, there are several things that I would like to purchase prior to August. As most of you know, I have a passion for technology. I want our students at ASFL to be equipped with the tools neccessary to thrive in a technological society. In order to achieve my vision of every classroom being a 21st century classroom, there are several pieces of equipment that are needed for each classroom: Interactive Activboard, ELMO document camera, LCD projector, and a wi-fi laptop computer. Most of  these materials are high-ticket items; although, I have received several wi-fi laptops donated by the U.S. Corp of Engineers.  I have BIG dreams! However, we can begin small with purchasing items that will support the integration of technology.

I gave all of that background information to explain why I am approving next week as Casual for a Cause week. The students will be allowed to pay $5.00 and wear their casusal clothes for the entire week. You may donate more, if you desire. The funds will be used to purchase the following items:
  • Access points for each wing of the building; wi-fi capability
  • Ink cartridges for the three donated networked printers; thanks to the U.S. Corp of Engineers
  • Technology professional development
  • Required material to upgrade donated laptops that do not have wi-fi or bluetooth capability; I would like each classroom to have at least one wi-fi laptop computer; again thanks to the U.S. Corp of Engineers for the support with technology
I truly appreciate your support in this matter. You are the BEST parents to have on a team.

In closing, I would like to wish you a very relaxing summer. If you need to contact me, please send me an e-mail. This is probably the best way to contact me at anytime. I will also be communicating with you via the parent blog, e-mail, or Parent Link.

Upcoming Events
May 20 - AR store will be open; Elementary Field Day; all students may wear casual clothes; no charge
May 21 - Student-Faculty Basketball game @ 1:45 p.m.; all students may wear casual clothes; no charge
May 24 - K-2 Awards Program @ 9:00 a.m.; 3-5 Awards Program @ 1:30 p.m.; this is Casual for a Cause Week; $5.00 charge; I suggest that the students wear Sunday dress for the awards program. They may change into play clothes.

Student Harassment and/or Bullying

On Monday morning I will be addressing the entire student body via Skype regarding the seriousness of harassing or bullying another student. Bullying is an issue that is prevalent across our country. It is a concern of educational personnel, parents, students, and the community. I plan to share our district's new policy "Policy 106-21 Student Harassment" and impress upon the students that student harassment is something that will not be taken lightly. I want them to especially understand that a form of bullying can simply be just words and comments that are directed to a particular student repeatedly, day after day. Bullying isn't just confined to the physical contact of hitting another student.

I am also requesting the assistance of parents to reiterate to your child the meaning of student harassment and bullying. It is important that your child understands what constitutes student harassment according to our district's policy. It is as equally important that the children know how to respond if they are presented with this type of conduct. Middle school students are sometimes reluctant to report student harassment because it may be considered tattling, snitching, or not cool in their eyes. Please share with them that nearest adult must be notified. If they don't receive a response, the next step is to notify administration. The adults cannot assist if we are not aware of the problems.

I will be working with Ms. Queeney, the school guidance counselor, to gather information relating to the topic of bullying to share with teachers, parents, and students. The information will be e-mailed to parents as well as posted on this blog.

Below is a section of the school district's policy on student harassment that will be shared with the students:

The term “harassment” as used in this policy means a continuous pattern of intentional behavior that takes place on school property, on a school bus, or at a school-sponsored function including, but not limited to, written, electronic, verbal, or physical acts that are reasonably perceived as being motivated by any characteristic of a student, or by the association of a student with an individual who has a particular characteristic, if the characteristic falls into one of the categories of personal characteristics as indicated in the first paragraph. To constitute harassment a pattern may do any of the following.

• Place a student in reasonable fear of harm to his or her person or damage to his or her property.

• Have the effect of substantially interfering with the educational performance, opportunities, or benefits of a student.

• Have the effect of substantially disrupting or interfering with the orderly operation of the school.

• Have the effect of creating a hostile environment in the school, on school property, on a school bus, or at a school-sponsored function.

• Have the effect of being sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive enough to create an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for a student.

Please know that the safety of your child is of the utmost importance to us. The staff and I take this responsibility seriously and would like to thank you for entrusting the care of your children to us.

If you have any additional comments or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me via e-mail. I realize that many individuals prefer not to post their comments on a blog, and I respect that decision.

Have a Happy Easter!

Tomorrow is Casual for a Cause!

Tomorrow is Casual for a Cause. The students may wear their casual clothes and bring in a non-perishable food item to donate to the local food bank. This activity has been organized by the National Elementary Honor Society students.

Also, Monday April 5th is Spring Pictures. The students may also wear their Easter/casual attire. I highly recommend that the students bring a change of clothes, especially if they wear their very nice Easter attire.

Have a great evening!

Another Technology Resource!

Parents,
Please add my Skype account name (tammy.summerville) to your information. This is another resource that can be used to promote better communication between home and school, not to mention the convenience. Of course, you would still need to send me an e-mail to schedule a time for the Skype activity. I have utilized Skype to conduct conferences with parents, interview prospective families, and collaborate with other educators across the country. It's a really cool tool!

Parent Requests for Class Placement

I have given a lot of thought to the practice of accepting parent requests for a specific teacher, particularly in K-5. This practice has been in place at ASFL for many years; however, because of many reasons, I will no longer accept parent requests effective with the 2010-2011 school year. I believe that ASFL offers a high-quality curriculum with very competent  and caring teachers. Over the last four years, I have made a concerted effort to get to know my students, parents, and teachers. I have made mental notes of students' personalities, students' individual needs, as well as the teaching styles of teachers. I can honestly say that I know all 428 students. Based on my observations and experiences, I believe that I can make a pretty good decision regarding what is best for the student.

If you have any additional information about your child that I am not aware of, please send me an e-mail. I do want to consider the needs of the entire child; however, please know that I do have your child's best interest in mind. Please do not include in the letter a request for a specific teacher. Thanks for honoring my request.

Intent for 2010-2011 School Year

We are preparing for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year. In order to project our enrollment as well as to determine the number of vacancies for each grade level, we need to know your plans for the next school year. If your child will not be attending ASFL next year, please send an e-mail to asflk8@gmail.com. Please place in the subject line: Intent for 2010-2011 School Year. You may also send me a letter or leave a voice message on my phone.  If I do not receive an e-mail, letter, or voice message,  I will assume that you plan to return in August.

Thanks! It's a joy to work with your child each day!

Standardized Testing Strategies

Below are some testing strategies to help ease your child’s test anxiety and encourage successful testing.
• Encourage your child to have a positive attitude during testing. Engage in positive talk.

• Make sure your child arrives to school on time each morning. Students who arrive after the testing has begun will have to remain in the library and participate in the make –up session on another day. Attendance is crucial. This can determine if we make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) or not. Please, please……..have your child at school on time.

• Make sure your child dresses comfortably. Some testing days will be longer than others. Dress your child in layers in case the testing room is too hot or too cold. I will do everything within my control to make sure the room is comfortable for all of the boys and girls.

• Make sure your child eats a good, balanced breakfast, if you can. PTA will provide a snack for every student.

• Adequate sleep is also necessary for good health. Normal nights of sleep are important while preparing for a test as well as the night before the exam.

• Exercise helps to maintain good health and to release tension. Take your child for a walk the night before the exam.

• Help your child see the test in context. A test is one “snapshot” of the student’s performance on a certain day. Knowing this might help students feel less stress about the test.

• Remember to remind your child to make sure his/her cell phone is turned off and placed in the locker, if applicable. If a cell phone rings during testing, this will be coded as an irregularity. We do not want to jeopardize our AYP status in any way.

Class Pictures

Class pictures will be sent home today. They are absolutely adorable! The cost is $12.00. Please make checks payable to ASFL. If you send cash, please place in a sealed envelope and label "class picture money." All monies are due by April 2, 2010.

Also, please note that Spring pictures will be taken on April 5th. Details are posted in an earlier post.

HCS Safe Schools Hotline

Our school district has a Safe Schools Hotline. The students will be receiving a bright orange card on Monday with the hotline number as well as an e-mail address to report any concerns.
