We have had a great beginning to this school year! The students returned energized and ready to learn! It has probably been the best opening since I've been at ASFL. I would like to thank you for encouraging your children to be respectful, be responsible, and to be safe every day. These words are a part of our daily message to the students. The students at ASFL are truly a cut above the rest! I am so blessed to have an opportunity to lead such a dynamic school community.
Updating our STI computer database with current student information is one of our first tasks that we work on upon returning in August. If you have not returned your child's registration packet, please do so by Monday, August 23rd. It is critical that we have the most recent contact information.
I am settling in to both office spaces; one in the main office and the other one in middle school. With the budget cuts, ASFL was reduced to a .5 Assistant Principal and a .5 Guidance Counselor. In order to be readily accessible to both elementary and middle school faculty and students, I decided to create a second space. So far- it seems to be working!
The students look great in their school uniforms! As a matter of fact, I am serving on a district-wide committee that is discussing the possibility of school uniforms for the district. A parent survey via Parentlink will be conducted in a few weeks. It really amazes me how the school uniform creates a calmness and focus within the students. Also, I have some kindergartener-first grade size new shirts with the ASFL logo that were donated. Please let me know if you need any of these items.
Some dates to remember:
August
23 - September 3: DIBELS Assessment for K-3 students; administered 3 times per year to determine students' oral reading fluency
September
6: Labor Day (No School)
13 - 15: 5th Grade Field Trip to Camp McDowell
17: Casual for a Cause Day - The students may pay $1.00 to wear their casual clothes. All of the proceeds will benefit our school, i.e. technology, classroom needs, outdoor classroom project; I am thinking that we will have at least one day a month designated as Casual for a Cause.
20-21: IB PYP Authorization Team Visit - The team will probably want to interview some parents, so I may be requesting some of you to participate.
21: PTA/Open House @ 6:00 p.m. (Tentative Date)
24: Fall School Pictures; Students may wear casual attire for fall pictures. These pictures will be in the yearbook. There is no charge to wear casual attire.
Please feel free to contact me at tsummerville@asflk8.com or 256-428-7000, if you have any questions or concerns. E-mail is probably the best means to reach me.
Thanks again for a great start! May your week be filled with breezes of excitement for the 2010-2011 school year.
